How to Bring Change

A medium-sized company is like a big pirate boat. You have your captain with a vision. He wants to make money and plunder as many ships as possible. You have your crew separated in multidisciplinary teams to operate every inch of the boat. They want to get rich too, but they won't have the most significant share as they don't have the risk of investment from the ship, so they also want to have an enjoyable ride as they will be stuck together for a long time.

If your crew is not happy, you will not be able to plunder. Force them in doing something they don't want to do, and you'll soon be left with an empty boat.

How do you make them happy? Give them control. They'll know what to do to be satisfied. You should not make any decisions but only share your goals and vision that everyone can understand and support.

What if your captain does not think like that initially and tries to control everything? If you're at any leadership level, this is your job to make sure he understands and that your team has the freedom it needs. If he hired you in a leading position, he would probably listen to what you have to say, but sadly, it is not guaranteed. If he does not listen, you leave ship.

Once the captain understands, your team will bring change naturally. They know what's best for the ship and what's best for them. They'll find the best solutions you would have never thought of and the best dedication to making them happen.
