Promoted to Crazy
I attended Confoo in 2020, and one of the essential presentations I attended was Age Discrimination in Tech by Robert Lefkowitz. The probable progression of one individual career will lead him to incompetence. You get promoted because you are good at what you do. After a few promotions, you will be doing different tasks, and if you're not that good at it, you won't be promoted anymore and will be stuck there for the rest of your career. The typical software developer transformed into a mediocre manager.
Incompetence should not be your main worry. Mental health should. As you progress and get promoted, you'll have more responsibilities and more critical decisions to make. You can be the most competent in your new position, but what difference does it make if you have a mental breakdown a few years down the road?
Before taking new responsibilities, make sure your head is ready for them. Balance your responsibilities between home and work. You'll have less and less time and more people looking up to you. Your career will last 30 or 40 years; make sure you can remain happy until then!
